Wow! in just a few hours a New Year will begin..2011. And what will it bring? So many of us make New Year resolutions, I did..to eat better, loose weight, read my bible in a year..but in reality how many of us will follow through, and why do we make them. For me, I look at it as New Beginnings. I figure even if I start and don't follow through, atleast I followed through for a few days, and it's still good.
2011..sounds so futuristic..In 1967 when I was just 10 years old, I would've imagined 2011, like the cartoons "The Jetsens", riding around in space cars, robots cleaning my house. But instead we have email..when was the last time you received a real live letter, we have texting, in which, we are loosing our concept in how to spell..example.."so how r u 2day, ttyl," I just heard on the news, how some schools what to take out cursive, since now most students don't write out their letters, because they have the keyboard. Encyclpedias? Who needs those today, when all you have to do is google a word..and bam..all the information you need.
Social Networking..who would've thought. I remember when a social gathering would be having friends and family over, or going somewhere..now we have Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, (and who comes up with these names). Now we can isolate ourselves, and sit on the computer and chat, socialize, send love via a heart..so convenient, and yet so inpersonal. The other day someone sent me a picture of a cup of coffee, wanting to share some coffee via a picture of one. What happened to the days when a neighbor, friend or relative would come over, and we would make a pot of coffee, sit at the kitchen table and share in some conversation face to face..but who needs that with facebook. Just 1 click away and I can send an image of a cup of coffee, or send some flowers and a heart. I can ask strangers to be my friends. In my wildest dreams I never would've imagined such technology.
So, my question is have come to far? Are our children and Grandchildren missing out, or am I just showing my age. I don't know. I guess I miss the good old days of receiving a letter, or even writing one out in cursive. I miss the actual connection of having friends over, for some real conversation and real coffee. I miss taking the time out and really researching an enclypedia..or a dictionary. I hope that books won't become obsolete.
So, 2011 here we are, with our facebooks, our texting, and although lots of good can come with technology, I just wonder what we may be missing. Just my thoughts, as we go into 2011...
